Building Together

Learning for Life

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome to our school.  I hope the information in this brochure will firstly  explain how the school operates and secondly be the start of a positive and fruitful relationship between yourselves and us as we work in partnership to develop your child into the wonderful individual you want them to be.

Everyone at Hogsthorpe Community Primary School is committed to doing their best, for each and every child.  To do this we try to ensure our school is colourful, exciting and welcoming to all who enter it – a place where children and adults feel secure, confident and motivated.  We know that each of our children comes to school with different experiences, knowledge and skills and that each has different learning needs and preferred ways of learning.  We therefore aim to match our provision to the needs of each child.

We take seriously our responsibility to develop children’s academic knowledge, skills and understanding but also their spiritual, moral, social and cultural attitudes.  We provide over an academic year and in our acts of collect worship, opportunities to explore these four elements of a rounded education and encourage an interest in local, national and global life-styles and issues.

We seek not only to provide an environment which promotes achievement in learning but also one of warmth, security and care, valuing each member of the school community and working to encourage the realisation of each individual’s potential.  We celebrate all achievement whether big or small and challenge our children (and ourselves) to improve even more.  We encourage a ‘can do’ culture, a thirst for life-long learning and a pride in each others’ skills and attributes.

Please read on and, if you have any further questions or would like an appointment to visit us, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours Sincerely,

Karin Nicholls

(Headteacher)

Dear Parents and Children,

We are the school council, a group of children that were elected by our classmates. There are two school council members in each year starting from Year 1.

Our job is to keep the children in our school happy. In the past we have helped to design our playground and our school uniform. This year we have concentrated on raising money in a very fun and active way. In the past few years we have organised a lot of fun days with either dressing up funny or having fun activities.  All these events we have charged £1 from each child which went to charity. This particular year we haven’t raised money for a charity but have been sponsoring a young boy in Africa. We have raised £144 which will help him and his family as well.

As school council we like to voice our opinion on our school. We think because Hogsthorpe is a small school it is especially nice for young people, because it’s more like a family feeling.

Because we have only got three classes in the school, we like to have our classrooms bright and exciting. In all our classrooms we have displays on the walls and children’s work. In the Robins class all three youngest years share a classroom, this is nice because they get to know each other really well and is a great start in school.

Overall we are happy with our school but we are always asking children what more they want improving. Hogsthorpe Community Primary School really listens to our ideas and does something about them, it’s great!

Yours Sincerely,

    The School Council.

HOGSTHORPE COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Introduction

Hogsthorpe Community Primary School was built in 1857 to serve the local community of Hogsthorpe.  Our school is set on the edge of the village and adjoins the village playing field and Village Hall.  We cater for children from the ages of 4 to 11 and, at present, have 42 children on roll.

These facilities within the school allow for flexibility in teaching methods and approaches as appropriate to the needs of individuals, small groups or whole classes.

Although we are a small school we are able to provide 16 networked laptops with networked PCs and interactive whiteboards in each teaching area.  Our aim is to keep up to date with new technology.

We have a friendly ‘family’ atmosphere that welcomes all children, parents and community, and children feel ‘at home’ within the first few days.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY CHILD STARTS SCHOOL?

ADMISSIONS

Early Fours

We listen to the needs of parents and children and offer a three term intake, taking pupils the term after they are 4 years old. We take in pupils in September, January and April in an Early Fours group. For this you need to apply directly to the school. This does not automatically ensure you a place in our Reception Year (see below).

Reception Year
For those of you who have children approaching school age, the admissions procedure is dealt with through the County Council, please come and visit the school where you will be given details of how to apply or visit www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/schooladmissions

Other Admissions
If you are moving into the area and have children who are already of school age, you are encouraged to visit our friendly school then all you have to do is complete the admissions form, return it to school and we will arrange a date for your children to begin school if we have places.

If you need further information please come in and see us or ask for our admissions policy.

Starting School in Early Fours or Reception
When your child is allocated a place at Hogsthorpe Community Primary School, we will write to you in the term prior to their start and invite you to a meeting at the school. We will discuss how you can best prepare your child for school and aim to answer any queries you might have. We have a separate booklet for parents of Foundation Stage children (Early Fours and Reception) and you will be given a copy of this at the meeting.

We will discuss your child’s entry into school to ensure that the transition is right for each individual child. We recognise that parents know their children best and will always listen to your preferences for your child.

School Times
Morning
Session: 8.45am - 12 noon Mid-morning
break: 10.45 am – 11.00 am
Afternoon Session: 1 pm - 3.30 pm Afternoon break: 2.15 pm - 2.30 pm

The Start of the Day
We provide a free Breakfast Club from 8.00 am until 8.45 am, here your child can have toast and cereals and play games.

A member of staff is on duty in the school playground at 8.45 a.m. For safety reasons, if your children do not attend breakfast club we ask that children do not arrive at school before 8.45 a.m. as they cannot be adequately supervised prior to this time. If you wish, you may accompany your child into the playground and remain with them until the whistle is blown.

The End of the Day
Key Stage 1 will not be allowed to leave the premises unless their parent or another designated adult is present to collect them. This also applies to Key Stage 2 children unless parents have given written authorisation that their child is allowed to walk home alone.

Lunchtimes
Healthy school meals are available at about £2.00 per day, or pupils may bring a packed lunch. However, should you wish your child to have lunch at home this is, of course, quite acceptable providing we are notified. The children eat their lunches in one sitting in the dining hall where they are supervised by 2 midday supervisors. They then have a playtime on the playground. If the weather is inclement, the children are supervised in the dining hall where they may take part in a variety of quiet activities. During the Summer Term children often eat outside.

If your child is staying to lunch, please send the lunch in a plastic box with the child’s name clearly marked. Please ensure that drinks (non fizzy) are in a secure plastic container – we are a healthy school and do not allow sweets or chocolate at lunchtimes. If you think your child may be entitled to free school meals, please contact the School Administrator.

Mid-Morning Break
All children receive a morning break when they are able to eat a healthy fruit snack, which they have brought from home, or purchase a fruit juice drink for 20p. Children in Key Stage 1 are given a piece of fruit or a carrot as part of the National Fruit Scheme. Children are allowed to play on our equipment during playtimes.

We encourage all our children to bring a sports bottle filled with water to drink during the day. This helps their brain function better and keeps them more alert.

School Uniform
We expect the wearing of uniform which is available from the school office.
Suggested clothing list:-

Blue sweatshirt / sweatcardy or fleece with school logo
White ‘polo’ T-shirt/ shirt or blouse
Grey or black trousers / skirt/ pinafore
Blue and white summer dress
Black school shoes

PE KIT
T-shirt
Shorts/jogging bottoms
Trainers or plimsolls

(Further information can be found on our School Uniform Policy)

Personal Property on School Premises

Pupils have to be responsible for the security of their personal possessions. We feel it to be unnecessary that they should bring toys, etc. to school, unless specifically in connection with ongoing classroom work. The wearing of jewellery is not permitted, although studs or sleepers in pierced ears are permitted. All jewellery must be removed before a child may participate in any physical education activity.

WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN AT SCHOOL?

The Curriculum
In providing for your children we are guided by the requirements of the National Curriculum and the requirements of Lincolnshire Education Authority.

We try to provide exciting, engaging learning opportunities which takes into account of every aspect of a child’s development. We aim to develop unique individuals who have skills which will help them throughout their entire lives.

Our school mission statement is ‘Building Together, Learning for Life’ and this is reflected in our celebration of success at all stages of a child’s school career. Children are encouraged to think, discuss, share, persevere and respect others. They work individually, in pairs, in small groups, within year groups, as class groups, and occasionally in cross-Key Stage groups, depending on the learning activity being undertaken. Classroom based activities are supported by a range of educational visits.

Teaching Groups
At present the school is organised into two classes.

Robins – Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2 (Key Stage 1)
Owls - Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 and Year 6 (Key Stage 2). The Owls class will be split into two very small teaching groups for Mathematics and English to ensure every pupil gets a high quality learning experience.

Organisation of the school depends very much on how many children there are in each year group, and may vary from year to year.

Assessment and recording
The progress and performance of every child will be regularly assessed throughout their school career.

The National Curriculum requires that children be assessed at certain stages of their schooling ( i.e. seven and eleven years in primary schools) but the majority of assessment will occur on a continuous basis from the day a child starts school in order to provide the right learning opportunities for each individual.

Parents are regularly informed of their child’s progress through parental consultation days and their annual written report.

School Clubs
We offer a wide range of after school clubs throughout the year. These have included football, cricket, racquet sports, table tennis, recorders, drama, golf, homework, 11+ coaching, gardening and Bikewise cycling proficiency training.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP

Parents and the Curriculum
Parents are valued at our school. If you have a problem please come and chat to your child’s teacher who will do their best to resolve it. Parents are always welcome in school and we value their support at all levels; from helping with your child’s homework and listening to your child read, to coming into schools to help in class or providing support on trips.

Homework
We believe that work at home is an essential element in a child’s education and we will continue to seek parental support with regard to any homework set. Children from Reception through to Year Six will be expected to do homework which, will vary in type and quantity depending on age/ability. Reading, learning tables and spellings, completing worksheets in Maths and English, preparing project work, planning literacy activities, revising, etc. are the types of activity children will be required to do for homework.

Hogsthorpe Fundraising Group
When your child enters Hogsthorpe Community Primary School you automatically become a member of our Friends of the School. You are invited to support our school as much as you are able, through supporting events or helping to arrange fundraising events, every little bit of help counts!

Change of circumstances
Should your address or emergency contact numbers change or pick-up procedures differ from usual, please inform the school so that our records can be updated. It is important to maintain accurate information on every child. If you think our records might be out of date please contact the office for a new form.

Health and Welfare
If your child is ill please ring the school before 9.00am to let us know. We would also be grateful if you would advise us of any absence you know in advance. Request forms for leave of absence (granted at the discretion of the school) are available from the office. As we are responsible for your child’s safety during school hours we cannot let him/her out of school unless collected by an adult.

Attendance
Please make sure your child attends school. Good attendance is a vital part of a good education. Please ensure your child arrives in school at the right time as lateness can cause disruption to the whole class.

School Activities
From time to time, the school arranges activities, such as visits, for which parents will be asked to contribute towards the cost. While no child will be excluded for failing to contribute, we reserve the right to cancel events for which insufficient contributions have been offered.

HOW THE SCHOOL SUPPORTS YOU AND YOUR CHILD

Talk to us.
If you have a problem please come in and talk about it with your child’s class teacher or, if the problem still hasn’t been resolved, with the Headteacher. All our staff are friendly, approachable and understanding and no problem is too small.

Parent Support Advisor
We have on staff someone who provides support for our parents. She is full of common sense to help you get through the very difficult job of parenting.

Health and Welfare
We are pleased to work in partnership with our school nurse, who is involved in health education at school. She is also available to offer advice to parents.

The health safety and well-being of all the children in our care is of the utmost importance. To this end we have in place a range of policies, systems and procedures which all members of the teaching and non-teaching staff follow. They cover such things as lunchtime supervision, evacuation in the event of an emergency, medical care, out of school activities, the use of safety equipment and so on. We also have in place for the children a clearly defined Code of Conduct that we expect to be followed at all times. All teachers will, from time to time, discuss the code of conduct with their classes and remind them of the type of climate we aim to provide at our school.

Gifted and Talented Children
We recognise the many gifts and talents that our children have and provide many opportunities to develop these gifts beyond the everyday curriculum.

Children with extra needs
The individual needs of all children will normally be catered for within the classroom situation by the class teacher. On occasions, however, some children may have a difficulty that requires extra support. We will provide the support that is best for each individual and keep you informed at all times.

Usually the teachers will identify when a child needs extra support but sometimes the parents may be the first to notice it or perhaps a child starting school for the first time is already receiving support. If you have any concerns, questions or information relating to your child and the need for additional support, it is vital for the child’s sake that there are good communications between home and school.

Accidents and Illness at School
If a child becomes ill, or in the event of an accident, we may need to contact parents. It is therefore vital that we have an emergency telephone number for occasions when you may not be at home.

Children suffering chronic illnesses such as asthma or diabetes may bring medicines to school, if accompanied by clear written instructions. Teaching and ancillary staff are not authorised to administer medicines and we therefore request that you discuss with us how this should be done.

Where children are suffering from short term illnesses the general rule is that they should not be in school until the course of any medical treatment is complete. Such medicines cannot therefore be accepted in school (though parents may bring them in, e.g. at lunchtime, and give them to their children)

Cough sweets etc should be handed to class teachers for administration.

Transfer to Secondary Education
At the end of their last year at Hogsthorpe children are prepared for their transfer to secondary school. The school feeds into the secondary schools in Skegness or Alford as we lie on the boundary between the two ‘catchment’ areas. Children are invited to spend time at each of the schools and teachers also come to Hogsthorpe to visit.

Parents of children who are due to leave for secondary school will be contacted, by the selective (“Grammar”) schools, about whether they wish their children to participate in the selection process. A series of tests takes place during the Autumn term.

Discipline and behaviour
In order to maintain the happy, relaxed atmosphere of the school, rules are kept to a minimum and usually relate to the welfare of everybody and respect for property. Clearly, certain codes of behaviour have to be enforced, and we ask for your co-operation and support in this.
Procedures for dealing with serious discipline problems, including the possible long or short-term exclusion of pupils, are carried out in accordance with Government and LEA guidance.
